Trafford

Born in the Parish of St. Mary's, Bowdon on 2nd September 1887, the birth
being registered during the December quarter 1887 in the Altrincham R.D. -
ref: 8a/176, the eldest son of Thomas William & Euphemia Margaret Killick
(nee Myrtle).  Baptised at St. John's P.C. on the 26th October 1887.

born: Bowdon, Cheshire.    Head of household - Thomas W. Killick - Married
- aged: 42 - occ: East India Merchant (Cheshire J.P. & Co. Cllr)   Born:
Hove, Sussex   Also - Euphemia M. Killick - Wife - aged: 34 - born: Java,
East Indies (British Subject).  Plus 6 siblings including his youngest
brother - John R. Killick who was also killed during WW1.  Plus 6 domestic
servants.

1901 Census - "Townfield House", Townfield, Altrincham.   Son - aged: 13 -
born: Bowdon, Cheshire.   Head of household - Thomas W. Killick - Married -
aged: 52 - occ: East India Merchant - born: Hove, Sussex   Also - Euphemia
M. Killick - Wife - aged: 44 - born: Java, East Indies (British Subject). 
Plus 6 siblings including his younger brother - John R. Killick who was
also killed during WW1.  Plus 7 domestic servants.

Educated at Dunchurch Hall and Repton School.

1911 Census - No Trace - then serving overseas with the Madras Volunteer
Guards perhaps???.     His family was now residing at "Southfield", Langham
Road, Bowdon.  His father , a 62 year old Cotton Shipping Merchant, his 54
year old mother together with 5 of Richard's siblings including his younger
brother - John Raymond Killick who was also killed during WW1.  The only
one missing was Richard.   There were now only 4 domestic servants.

He was a Director of Messrs. George Woodley & Co.

Spent 4 years in the Madras Volunteer Guards from which he was transferred
to the 06th Bn [1] Manchester Rgt at the outbreak of war and went with the
remainder of the East Lancashire Division to Egypt..   SDGW states that he
died on the 18/05/15.

It was reported that on the night of his death, he was in 'D' Coy's trench
when he was shot through the head by a sniper.   His men were devasted by
his death as he was an officer who cared deeply for the well-being of his
men.  He was buried by his men in map ref: 176.5.4.

Death reported in the 25/03/1915 of the Altrincham Guardian, the report
stated that he was a Lieutenant.

CWGC - Son of Thomas William & Euphemia Margaret Killick of Southfield,
Bowdon, Cheshire.  Formerly Lt. Madras Volunteer Guards from which he was
transferred to the 1st/6th Bn. Manchester Rgt.

His father was a member of the Manchester Reform Club on King Street,
Manchester.   So both Richard and his brother John Raymond are commemorated
on this memorial as a "Son of Member".

Also commemorated on a private memorial plaque in St. Mary's, Bowdon.   
Inscribed: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his
life for his friends"

His brother John Raymond also died on active service.   It is said that his
brother John, sailed from India in 1916 so that he could enlist to avenge
the death of Richard.

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1916.

His father was a member of the Manchester Reform Club, 81 King Street,
Manchester.
