Born during the June quarter 1887 in the Edmonton R.D. - ref: 3/417, the son of William John & Mary Tyeth Hartley (nee Hart). 1891 Census - "Blythwood", Beech Hill Estate, next to Hadley Wood, Enfield, London. Son - aged: 3 - born: Edmonton, London. Head of household - William J, Hartley - Married - aged: 34 - occ: Tea Dealer (Grocer) - born: Dorchester Dorset. Also - Mary T. Hartley - Wife - aged: 31 - born: Hackney, Middlesex. Plus - 4 siblings - and 3 domestic servants. 1901 Census - Bedford School, 18 Rothsay Place, Bedford. Scholar - aged: 13 - born: Enfield. His elder brother was also attending the School. His parents were visiting William & Emily Hartridge at Walpole House, Yarmouth Road, Thorpe next Norwich. Attended Bedford School, 18 Rothsay Place, Bedford. Established 1552. The main school building was built in 1891. 1911 Census - "Cottesmore", (13 roomed house) Queens Road, Brentwood, Essex.
