Mrs. Mary Haughton is listed in the local street directories for 1914 &
1915, as being a shopkeeper at No. 39 Chapel St and a lodging house keeper
at No. 36. Not listed at No. 39 in the 1916 directory - no-one is listed
at that address in 1916.

In the early 1900s, both William and his mother featured in the local
newspapers. William issued a summons for assault by Edith Barber of Back
Chapel Street. He and three other youths pleaded guilty to stealing
strawberries in Timperley and fined 2/6d (12 1/2p). An article in
September 1905, described the Street as 'noisy and disgraceful' when Mary
Haughton and Annie Kelly fell out, which they did quite frequently. In
October 1906, William was charged with being drunk & disorderly.

Enlisted on the 7th August 1914. On the 12th January 1915, he was recorded
as being a deserter in Reading. Drafted to France on the 4th August 1915.
He spent some time in hospital and was later promoted to the rank of Lance
Corporal.

CWGC list him as William HOUGHTON and killed on the 11th March 1916. SDGW
states that he resided at Altrincham. There are NO William Haughton's on
the CWGC web-site, nor SDGW.

Listed on the Chapel Street Memorial as having served in the Royal
Engineers.
