Born during the March quarter 1894 in the Salford R.D. - ref: 8d/168, the son of Matthew & Mary Gibb (nee James). His father was a regular soldier who enlisted on the 1st July 1867 in the 60th Foot - No.1474. 1901 Census - 61 Howard Street, Salford. Son - aged: 7 - born: Salford. Head of household - Matthew Gibb - Married - aged: 51 - occ: Soldier - Staff Quarter Master Sergeant - born: Scotland. Also - Mary Gibb - Wife - aged: 42 - born: Farrington Garney, Somerset. Plus - 5 brothers and 1 elder sister. His father was a professional soldier who enlisted at Glasgow on the 1st July 1867 and fought in Afganistan 1878/79/80, then to Mari Country (North-west Frontier) 1880 and South Africa 1881. His Afganistan Medal had a clasp for Ahmed Kheyl and Kandahar. He retired from the Army on the 31st March 1905 to reside at 8 Cooke Street, Old Trafford. 1911 Census - 69 Humphrey Street, Old Trafford. Son - aged: 17 - occ: Raillway Booking Clerk - born: Salford. Head of household - Matthew Gibb - Married - aged: 62 - occ: Post Desk Clerk - born: Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Also - Mary Gibb - Wife - aged: 52 - born: Farrington Garney, Somerset. Plus 4 brothers. Originally a private - No 3066 in the Manchester Rgt. Attd to the 4th Bn. On the 16th April 1918, as part of the final German offensive of the War, Passchendaele was re-occupied by the German Fourth Army. This offensive continued on the 17th when Wytschaete & Meteren were captured. Kia at Meteren. Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Stretford Cem. Stretford M.I. - "Greater love hath no man". His father, Matthew died 25/05/1921 aged 71 years and his mother, Mary died 02/06/1937 aged 77 years. |
