Trafford

Born during the March quarter 1895 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/977, the
youngest son of John & Alice Ann Ormrod (nee Hughes).

1901 Census - 28 Hullard Street, Stretford.    Son - aged: 6 - born: Hulme,
Manchester.     Head of household - John Ormrod - Married - aged: 50 - occ:
Coal Merchant - born: Ashton under Lyne.    Also - Alice Ann Ormrod - Wife
- aged 46 - born: Hulme, Manchester.   Plus 2 elder brothers and 4 elder
sisters.

1911 Census - 19 Stamford Street, Old Trafford.     Son - aged: 16 -
Student - born: Hulme, Manchester.     Head of household - John Ormrod -
Married - aged: 60 - occ: Coal Merchant - born: Ashton under Lyne.    Also
- Alice Ann Ormrod - Wife - aged 56 - born: Hulme, Manchester.   Plus 4
elder sisters.

Attended Manchester Municipal Secondary School and Manchester University
where he gained a Bachelor of Arts for Latin in 1914.  Reported in the
05/10/1914 edition of the Manchester Courier.   Joined the Officer Training
Corps in November 1913 and served until January 1916.   Gazetted Temporary
Lieutenant in the Yorkshire Light Infantry 25th January 1916.

On the 1st July 1916 they were in action with the 8th Division attacking at
Ovillers.   The two leading battalions of the 70th Brigade were the 8th
Yorks & Lancs and the 8th K.O.Y.L.I..    They commenced their attack from
in front of Authuille Wood at 07.30 hrs and at first, they made some
progress, but as they approached the German trenches to the west of the
Nordwerk and the Nordwerk itself, they came under heavy fire from this
posittion and the Leipzig Redoubt to the north.   All the officers became
casualties and overall, the 70th Brigade sustained 2,000 in this engagement
- 2,000 out of the 60,000 Allied soldiers killed or wounded that day.

Death reported in the 10/07/1916 edition of the Manchester Evening News,
which stated that he had been on active service for three months (April
1916 ???)

Post WW1 his parents were residing at 18 Alphonsus Street, Old Trafford.

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Stretford Cemetery.   His
father John died 04/02/1915 aged 64 and his mother Alice Ann died
01/06/1935 aged 80.
