Wireless Operator/Air Gunner. Flying with 22 Sqn a four man crew took off at 05.30 hours from RAF North Coates, Lincolnshire, in a Beaufort Mk.i - No. L9800 - OA-D for a "Rover" Patrol. Shortly after take off they experienced problems and crashed into the sea half a mile off-shore. The body of the pilot - Sgt. J.P. Rylands was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. Sgt. D.D. Palmer is buried at Ryde, Sgt. P.W. Ripley at Bognor Regis and Sgt N.H. Jackson at Manchester (Southern) Cemetery. W.e.f. 8th April 1940 - 22 Sqn was detailed to RAF North Coates, Lincolnshire, situated 5 miles south-east of Grimsby on the Humber Estuary. Sale R.U.F.C. centenary book states that he was killed while flying. Commemorated on the Screen Wall at Manchester (Southern) Cemetery. |
