Not 100% sure about this one. It's just possible that this is Signalman Maitland Steel - 2594893 - died 02/11/43 - aged: 37 - Royal Corps of Signals, attd III, Indian Signal Corps - son of Mr. & Mrs. James Steel and husband of Mary D. Steel of Belhaven, East Lothian. Buried at Kanchanaburi Cem, Thailand - 2/B/14. As I only have "M. Steel" to go on - rightly or wrongly I have gone with this one. The Newton Pine was built in 1925, it's gross register tonnage was 4,212, it was 377 feet long, 51 feet wide and could make 9.5 knots. A cargo ship, it was one of 3 ships operated by the John Ridley, Tulley & Son, Milburn House, Dean St, Newcastle upon Tyne. In the Atlantic, SE of Cape Farewell/SW of Iceland, travelling from the U.K. to New York via Halifax, Nova Scotia. in ballast,on the 16/10/42 she was torpedoed by U-410, in convoy SC108* and sank in position - 55N 30W. There were 0 survivors, and 47 crew/passengers were lost. Another source states that she was a straggler with Convoy ONS 136, comprising 36 ships and that 40 crew/passengers were lost. |
