Employed as a Traveller and Salesman with a Manchester Firm, before joining the RN. He had 12 years service in the RN and had been in H.M.S. Cossack since January 1941 taking part in the sinking of the Bismark. Whilst escrting convoy HG.75 - H.M.S. Cossack was torpedoed at 23.37 hrs on the 23/10/41 by U-563 off the west coast of Portugal, in position 35.12N 08.17W. Strenuous efforts were made to save the ship, but it sank at 10.43hrs on the 27/10/41. It was a 'Tribal' Class Destroyer of which 16 were built between 1936 & 1939. They had a displacement of 1,870 tons and a complement of 200 personnel. |
