Born during the June quarter 1920 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref:
8c/1269, the son of Sydney & Dorothy Chipperfield (nee Jenkinson).

Attended Calday Grange School, West Kirby on the Wirral & the Royal
Lancaster Grammar Schools.    Employed by H.J. Heinz Co., Old Trafford.

Played rugby for Sale F.C. (forward).  The Sale F.C. Centenary book states
that he died in an accident, as does the local newspaper report.  Played
cricket for Brooklands C.C.

Soon after war broke out he joined the FAA within the RN and trained as a
fighter pilot in the No. 31 (RAF) S.F.T.S. (Service Flying Training School)
at Gananoque, Kingston, Ontario Canada.    Gazetted 7th October 1941 to
Temporary Sub-Lieutenant (A).

His mother died on the 30th November 1941, aged: 47 and is buried in Sale
(Brooklands) Cemetery.

Posted to H.M.S. Formidable, an Illustrious-class Aircraft Carrier and died
at Sea off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt in a flying accident along with
Lieutenant Eric Draper Dunkley and Sub-Lieutenant Manning George Roy
Railton.   The Carrier was on its way to the Pacific at the time.

He was mentioned in despatches on the 26th January 1945 for undaunted
courage, skill and determination in carrying out attacks on the German
battleship "Tirpitz".

Commemorated on the family grave in Sale (Brooklands) Cemetery.  Also
commemorated on the Royal Lancashire Grammar School War Memorial

Probate granted at Manchester on the 8th August 1945 to Dorothy Betty
Chipperfield (his younger sister).   Died on war service and resided at 164
Parrin Lane, Monton, Eccles, Lancashire.   His Estate was valued at £765.
