Navigator. Flying with 78 Sqn, they took off at 2132hrs from R.A.F. Breighton, Yorkshire, in a Halifax Mk.II, No. JD151 EY-M on a bombing operation over Nürnberg. On their return at 0619hrs, they were low on fuel and whilst on approach for a priority landing they crashed short of the runway between the villages of Wressell & Breighton, some 6 miles ENE of Selby, Yorkshire. Two crew died in the crash, five were injured, but one died two days later. 653 aircraft took part in this raid - 318 Lancasters, 216 Halifaxes and 119 Stirlings. 7 Halifaxes, 6 Lancasters and 3 Stirlings were lost. The raid centred on the central and southern parts of the town. The Lorenzkirche, the largest of the city's old churches was badly damaged and about 50 houses in the preserved Altstadt were destroyed. There was a large fire area in the Wöhrd district, with serious property damange. 577 people were killed. |
