Born during the September quarter 1911 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/367, the son of Robert William & Ethel Walker (nee Leybourn). Attended Altrincham Grammar School. Married Marjorie Evelyn Robinson during the June quarter 1939 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/549. A keen sportsman, he played cricket for Sale Cricket Club, rugby for Ashton on Mersey R.U.F.C. and badminton at St. Mary's Church hall. Having already completed 28 bombing missions over Germany, he was flying with 214 Sqn (3 Group), when they took off from R.A.F. Stradishall, Suffolk, undertaking an air test in a Wellington Mk 1c No. T2956 BU. The aircraft is believed to have iced up whilst flying in low cloud and crashed at 12.40hrs at Great Wratting, 2 miles NNE of Haverhill, Suffolk. The CWGC lists P/O Walker as being with 38 Sqn, a unit that had moved recently to the Middle East. "Bomber Command Losses - 2nd WW" list him as flying with 214 Sqn at the time of the crash, but still on the strength of 38 Sqn. The entire crew of 6 were killed - they were:- Pilot - Pilot Officer G.F. Shaw, Sgt. P.R. Peart, Sgt. A.S. Roberts, Sgt. R. Cain, and Sgt. W.E. Griswold. Death reported in the 17/01/1941 edition of the Sale & Stretford Guardian. Photo in the local newspaper. Grave purchased by his mother - Mrs. Ethel Walker. Buried 16/01/1941 - Burial No. 23166.
