Trafford

Born during the December quarter 1917 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/1100,
the son of William Robert & Lilly Clinton (nee Priestnall).

He was a keen motorcyclist, having motorcycled extensively over Europe, and
a keen rugby player.  He was a member of the Sale Cricket Club where his
father was the Hon. Treasurer.    Strangely, he is not commemorated on the
Sale Cricket Club WW2 Memorial.

He was employed for three years as a Costing Clerk by Edward Wood & Co.,
Trafford Park.

William joined the RAFVR one week after war broke out and qualified as an
Observer (Navigator).

Flying with 21 Sqn they took off at 19.55hrs from R.A.F. Watton, Norfolk,
in a Blenheim Mk IV No. R3673 YH, on a bombing operation over Hannover. 
They and crashed at 04.00hrs on returning to base, the aircraft burst into
flames and Sgt Clinton died a few hours later.  Another crew member died on
the 25th March - total losses 3 crew.  Buried 28/03/1941 - Burial No.

Guardian.

During the early part of the war, No. 21 Squadron, flying Blenheim IVs,
played a prominent part in No. 2 Group's offensive against shipping in the
English Channel and the North Sea, and "fringe" targets on the Continent.

William's grave was purchased by his father - William Clinton and he was
buried on the 28/03/1941 - Burial No. 23250.
