An apprentice at Linotype Ltd, Broadheath. Joined the RN on outbreak of war and H.M.S. Barham was his first (and only) ship. Ordinance Artificer 4th Class H.M.S. Barham was torpedoed at 16.30hrs on 25/11/41, off the Libyan Coast in position 32.34N 26.24E by U.331. It capsized and blew up within five minutes 862 men lost - 450 rescued. It was a 'Queen Elizabeth' Class Battleship of which 5 were built between 1913 & 1915. They had a displacement of 31,000 tons and a complement of 1,200 personnel. |
