Accidentally drowned in the River Medway at Kingsnorth, Kent. Inquest into his death held at the R.N. Hospital, Chatham, Kent on Friday 11th May 1917. According to the evidence given to the inquest by another Urmston man - Thomas James Richards RNAS - he entered a rowing boat in which he was unaware that there were no oars. The boat suddenly drifted away from the river bank (presumably he must have jumped overboard) as the report states - that although he was a strong swimmwer, being a Lancashire water polo player, he was seized by cramp and drowned before help could get to him. Buried 15/05/1917 - Burial No. 1,669. Private Gravestone. M.I. - "In the midst of life, we are in death". His wife, Lily Ann Freeman died 03/04/1963 aged 76 years. |
