Born during the December quarter 1894 in the Settle R.D. - ref: 9a/14a, the
eldest son of Hubert & Jane Eliza Gomersall (nee Wright).

1901 Census - 58 Church Road, Urmston.   Son - aged: 6 - born: Long
Preston, Yorkshire.   Head of household - Hubert Gomersall - Married -
aged: 44 - occ: Commercial Clerk (Assistant Cashire) Engineer Sewing Cotton
Company - born: Kirkby Malham, Yorkshire.   Also Jane E. Gomersall - Wife -
aged: 31 - born: Gargrave, Yorkshire.   Plus 3 younger siblings.

1911 Census - 14 Queen's Road, Urmston.   Son - aged: 16 - Scholar - born:
Hellifield, Yorkshire.    Head of household - Hubert Gomersall - Married -
aged: 54 - occ: Cashire for Limited Company - born: Otterburn in Craven,
Yorkshire.   Also Jane E. Gomersall - Wife - aged: 41 - born: Bell Busk,
Yorkshire.   Plus 7 younger siblings.

From Ray Westlake's, "British Battalions on the Somme" -  The 22nd Bn (7th
City), Manchester Regiment were part of 91 Brigade, 7th Division.  On the
1st July, the 'B' & 'D' Companies led the assault on Mametz, reaching
Bucket Trench & Danzig Alley.  With high losses, 'A' & 'C' Companies in
support moved on to Fritz Trench, but were held up.  Bombers cleared Bright
Alley.   Battalion casualties - 390.

Post WW1, his parents resided at "Newholme", 69 Queen's Road, Urmston.

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Urmston Cemetery.   His
father, Hubert died 02/09/1936 aged 80 years and his mother, Jane Eliza
died 20/02/1954 aged 54.

Individually commemorated on a brass plaque in St. Clement's Church.  
"SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF WILLIAM ELLIS GOMERSALL LIEUTENANT 22ND BATT.
MANCHESTER REGIMENT WHO FELL IN THE ATTACK ON MAMETZ  JULY 1ST 1916 - AGED
21 YEARS.  "MAY LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE ON THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR
THEIR COUNTRY AND THE RIGHT".
