Born on the 1st May 1899, the birth being registered during the June quarter 1899 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/718, the son of Charles & Jessie Wood (nee Hindley). 1901 Census - Woodsend Road, Flixton. Son - aged: 2 - born: Flixton. Head of household - Charles Wood - Married - aged: 28 - occ: Carter on Farm - born: Flixton. Also - Jessie Wood - Wife - aged: 27 - born: Over, Cheshire. Plus 2 brothers. 1911 Census - Woodsend Road, Flixton. Son - aged: 11 - Scholar - born: Flixton. Head of household - Charles Wood - Married - aged: 38 - occ: Farmer's Son Working on Farm - born: Flixton. Also - Jessie Wood - Wife - aged: 37 - born: Lostok Gralam, Cheshire. Plus 3 siblings. ADM188/717 - He was employed as a Warehouse Assistant when he enlisted into the Royal Navy on the 1st February 1915. He was 5 feet 4 1/2 inches in height and had a chest measurement of 31 1/2 inches. His complexion was Fresh, eyes were Blue and his hair was Auburn. Serving on HMS Powerful, he was a Boy Class II rating from the 1st February 1915 until Promoted to Bot Class I rating on the 3rd August 1915. He then served on HMS Victory I from the 4th August to the 9th August 1915. Then transferred to HMS Canada on the 15th August 1915. His Character was described as 'Very Good' and his ability as 'Satisfactory' [HMS Canada (1913) was a battleship that the Chilean Navy had ordered as Almirante Latorre. She was launched in 1913, but the British government purchased her in 1914 after the outbreak of the First World War. He died on the Hospital Ship HMS Plessy from injuries received whilst erecting a Derick for Coaling. There was a Court of Enquiry over his death. In addition to the family gravestone, there is also a separate stone scroll block from his ship mates on H.M.S. "Canada", the M.I. on that is - "A token of esteem and sympathy from his fellow shipmates on HMS Canada". Listed as "Scout" - 1st Flixton Troop, on the Urmston & Flixton Scout's War Memorial. His father, Charles died 01/07/1946 aged 74 years and his mother, Jessie died 10/01/1953 aged 80 years. |
