Born Nellie Hill during the June quarter 1897 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/843, the daughter of Thomas & Diana Allice Hill (nee Aston). 1911 Census - 145 Second Avenue, Trafford Park. Daughter - aged: 12 - born: Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. Head of household - Thomas Hill Snr. - Married - aged: 36 - occ: Tramway Inspector - born: Holmes Chapel. Also - Diana Alice Hill - Wife - aged: 37 - born: Worcester. Plus 6 siblings, including Thomas Jnr. who was also later to be killed in this incident. Married William Harcourt Smith during the September quarter 1925 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. ref: 8c/1445. 1939 National Registration - 6 Clifton Street, Stretford. William H. Smith - Married - born: 10th July 1897 - occ: Joiner Bench & Fixing. Nellie Smith - Married - born: 4th June 1898 - occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties. CWD Report No. 97. Died at 32 Stanley Road, Old Trafford, from where her body was recoverd at 17.20 hrs on the 24th December 1940 and taken to the Church Street Mortuary, Stretford. Her body was released for burial to the Council's Undertaker Contractor - R. Pepperdine, 31 Ayres Road, Old Trafford. She residied at 6 Clifton Street, Old Trafford - a street that also suffered severe bomb damage and loss of life. Her husband, her parents and her younger brother - Thomas Hill Jnr, were all killed in this incident. Killed when a land mine landed on Stanley Road, Old Trafford. This was the worst single incident in terms of loss of life in the whole of Greater Manchester during WW2. In total, thirty three persons were killed. Buried 27/12/1940 - Burial No. 17,857. CWGC - of 6 Clifton Street, Old Trafford. Daughter of Thomas and Diana Hill; wife of William Harcourt Smith. Died at 32 Stanley Road. |
