Born during the September quarter 1887 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. -
ref: 8c/605, the son of Edward & Elizabeth Ann Berry (nee Newton).

1891 Census - 98 Partington Lane Worsley, Barton upon Irwell, Lancashire.  
Son - aged: 4 - Scholar - born: Swinton.   Head of household - Edward Berry

Elizabeth Berry - Wife - aged: 49 - born: Swinton.    Plus 5 siblings.

1901 Census - 67 Partington Lane, Swinton.    Son - aged: 13 - occ:
Apprentice Joiner - born: Swinton.   Head of household - Edward Berry -
Married - aged: 51 - occ: Landscape Gardener - born: Tingewick,
Buckinghamshire.    Also Elizabeth A. Berry - Wife - aged: 50 - born:
Boothstown, Lancashire.    Plus 6 siblings.

Married - Edith Clegg during the December quarter 1908 in the Salford R.D.
- ref: 8d/32.   Their first child - Ernest Frederick Berry was born on the
8th May 1909.  Elizabeth was born on the 18th September 1888.

1911 Census - 3 Dumville Street, Pendleton, Salford.    Son in Law -

Their second child - John Arnold Berry was born on the 7th April 1912.

WO363 - Attested at Manchester into the R.G.A. on the 5th November 1914.  
Posted into the No.2 Depot, Fort Rowner, Gosport, Hampshire on the 6th
November.    He was aged: 27 years 3 months and employed as a Surface Man
Colliery Worker.   At 5 feet 6 1/2 inches tall, he weighed 143 lb.  His
expanded chest measurement was 39 1/2 inches with a 2 inch rate of
expansion.   He had a 'Fair' Complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair.  
Posted to 38 Company, RGA on the 11th November 1914.   On the 9th February
he was disciplined for 'Overstaying his leave' from 22.00 hrs on the 9th to
07.55 hrs on the 12th, for which he was deprived of 4 days pay.    On the
4th July 1915, whilst at Camp he was reprimanded for 'neglect of duty'.  
Posted to France on the 22nd July 1915, he became a Gunner on the 28th July
1915.   Joined 12 Battery in the field on the 7th August 1915 and killed on
the 28th August.  His effects - a purse, watch, leather guard, small boots,
1/2 penny stamp and 3 photos in a small book were sent to his widow from
the Dover office on the 31st August 1915.  He was buried in the
Vlamertinghe Cemetery, Ypres. [This is probably an error, as he is now
buried in Hop Store Cemetery, close to Vlamertinghe Cemetery]

His wife was still residing at 3 Dumville Street, Pendleton in September
1915 when she was contacted by the RGA Record Office at Dover asking for
copies of her marriage certificate and birth certificates on any children
in order to progress her war widow's pension.  Elizabeth was awarded a
pension for herself and her two children of 18/6d per week. w.e.f. the 13th
November 1915.

M.I. - "Aged 28.  In memory of my dear husband.  Only goodnight beloved,
not goodbye".

Post War, his widow was residing at 7 Westminster Street, New Strawberry
Road, Pendleton.
