Trafford

Born at Sale on the 10th October 1892, the birth being registered during
the December quarter 1892 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/173, the
youngest son of John Herbert & Elizabeth Stones (nee Holmes).   John
Herbert Stones was a Paper Merchant, born at Stretford in 1863.

His father - John Herbert Stones, died on the 2nd July 1893, aged 30 years.
 His mother then married Joseph Edwin Taylor during the June quarter 1896
in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/289.

Educated at Mintholme School, Southport and Rydal Mount School, Colwyn Bay.
  Employed in the Birmingham Branch of Lloyds Bank.

1901 Census - Homer Road, Solihull, Birmingham.   Stepson - aged: 8 - born:
Sale, Cheshire.   Head of household - Joseph Taylor - Married - aged: 50 -
occ: Gas & Electric Light Fittings Manufacturer - born: Camberwell, Surrey.
  Also Elizabeth Taylor (his mother) - Wife - aged: 39 - born: Manchester. 
Plus his younger brother - Eric Stones (also born at Sale), 2 step-siblings
and 2 domestic servants.

1911 Census - "Ravenswood", Homer Road, Solihul, Birmingham.   Stepson -
aged: 18 - born: Sale.   Head of household - Joseph Taylor - Married -
aged: 60 - occ: Manufacturer - born: Camberwell, Surrey.   Also Elizabeth
Taylor (his mother) - Wife - aged: 49 - born: Whalley Range, Manchester. 
Plus his younger brother - Eric Stones (also born at Sale), 1 step-brother
and 2 domestic servants.

His step-father - Joseph Edwin Taylor died in 1914, aged: 64.

Volunteered to join the 1st (Birmingham) Battalion of the Warwickshire
Regiment on its formation in September 1914.   Obtained a Commission in the
Northumberland Fusiliers on the 17th September 1915 and served in France
and Flanders from May 1916 where he was a Reserve Officer for the Lewis Gun
Section and passed a course of instruction for company commanding.   The
Battalon War Diary records that:  On the 3rd November 1916, the Battalion
was stationed at Cough Drop Trench, Flers, Somme, when at 07.30 hrs that
morning, 2nd Lieutenant Stones ('A' Coy) was sniped in the head.

MIC - Private - Royal Warwickshre Rgt.   2nd Lieutenant - 3/5th Battalion,
Northumberland Fusiliers.  Acting Captain - 3/5th Battalion, Northumberland
Fusiliers.  Posted to France on the 13th May 1916.   His mother's address
was given as - Mrs. Taylor, "Edenhurst", Torquay, south Devon.

Commemorated on the family gravestone in Sale Cemetery - N408.
