Trafford

Born during the September quarter 1891 in the Congleton R.D. - ref: 8a/292,
the son of Charles & Sarah Hannah Cumberbatch (nee Deeming).  Baptised 23rd
August 1891 at St Marys Church, Astbury.

1901 Census - Brownlow, Newbold Astbury, Congleton, Cheshire.    Son -
aged: 7 - born: Astbury, Cheshire.   Head of household - Charles
Cumberbatch - Married - aged: 35 - occ: General Farm Labourer - born:
Astbury, Cheshire.   Also - Sarah H. Cumberbatch - Wife - aged: 32 - born:
Madeley, Staffordshire.   {lus 4 siblings.

1911 Census - Wall Hill Farm, Astbury, Congleton, Cheshire.   Servant -
aged: 19 - occ: Head Waggoner on Farm run by Henry Tipping and family -
born: Astbury, Cheshire.    His parents and his 7 siblings are still
residing at Brownlow, Newbold Astbury, Congletyon, Cheshire.

Married Hannah M. Minshull during the March quarter 1913 in the
Macclesfield R.D. - ref: 8a/251.   Hannah was born in 1895 and was employed
as a Domestic Servant in 1911.  They produced two children - Arthur in 1913
in the Macclesfield R.D. and Amy in 1917 in the Bucklow R.D.

Employed as a Police Constable No.104, for 6 years with the Cheshire
Constabulary and stationed at Sale until April 1917 when he enlisted in the
Coldstream Guards.  See below.

10 days before his death, he had been to Astbury to visit his sick wife and
he appeared to be in good health.    Returned to barracks and developed
influenza - pneumonia supervened.

Death reported in the 19/07/1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.   A
full military funeral was held at Astbury attended by representatives of
the Army and the Police.

CWGC - Son of Charles and Sarah Hannah Cumberbatch, of Child's Lane,
Brownlow, Astbury, Congleton; husband of Hannah Cumberbatch.

Commemorated on the Cheshire Constabulary War Memorial and in their War
Memorial Book.

His widow married William Rhodes in 1919.

I have extracted from Arthur's record, but the CAPTCHA doesn't work, so I
have not been able ask him get through to him.  If Bob objects at anytime,

"Arthur, a farm labourer at the time, married Hannah Maria Minshull on 9th
January 1913 at St Mary's Church, Astbury, Cheshire. Shorty after their
marriage their son Arthur was born. They would also later have a daughter,
Amy, in 1917.
Arthur became Police Constable 104 in the Cheshire Constabulary on 8th
February 1913. His weekly pay as a police constable was from joining on 8th
February 1913 26s/10d; a year later on 8th February 1914 it was increased
to 28s/- per week; from 8th February 1915 29s/2d, from 1st July 1915
31s/6d; from 8th February 1916 31s/6d and from 8th February 1918 32s/8d. 
He was never promoted and has a clean misconduct record. He left the
Cheshire police force after 5 years, 2 months, 12 days (1897 days) on 20th
April 1918.
He  enlisted into the Army at Knutsford, Cheshire on 20th April 1918 for
service during World War One as private 26500 in the Coldstream Guards. His
initial posting was to the HQ Reserve Division, Chester. Other Postings and
Dates: 1st April 1913 Knutsford. 13th September 1917 Sale. He was passed
fit for duty at his Army medical examination on 16th April 1918 at Chester
Castle. He was described as being:

Height:  6' 1",   Age: 21 years 6 months,  Eyes: Grey,   Hair: Dark Brown, 
 Complexion: Fresh,   Build: Proportional,   Distinguishing Marks: Nil. 

Arthur travelled down to London and it is suspect that he contracted the
Spanish Flu and this killed him. Private 26500, Arthur CUMBERBATCH,
Coldstream Guards died on Tuesday 9th July 1918 at the Caterham Military
Hospital due to (1) Pneumonia and (2) Heart Failure; he was aged 26 years.
Arthur was buried in the north-west of St. Mary's Church, Astbury, Cheshire
on 13th July 1918. Arthur had been in the army for a total of 2 months 18
days. He is commemorated on the WW1 War Memorial in the grounds of Astbury
Church. He has a Commonwealth War Grave stone in the churchyard of Astbury.
He is also remembered by the Cheshire Police each November on Remembrance
Day:

Arthur has never been forgotten by the Cheshire Constabulary, each year in
November during the Force Remembrance Parade held at Winsford Police HQ his
and all other officers  names are read out. There is also in the Foyer of 
HQ a very large wooden Memorial Plaque that contains the names of all
officers

Pension Records - Listed under the name "Cumbirbatch" - Widow - Hannah M.
Cumberbatch, 2 Fern Bank, Stamford Street, Ashton upon Mersey.  Awarded a
£7 grant on the 9th August 1918. and a weekly pension of 25/5d w.e.f. the
13th January 1919.   Arthur and Hannah had two children - Arthur
(b.27/02/1913) and Amy (b.04/07/1917).    Hannah's address changed to 8
Farden Street, Congleton, Cheshire.   Cause of Arthur's death = Pneumonia.

As a result of his death his son Arthur Cumberbatch entered St Georges
House, The Northern Police Orphanage, Harrogate, Yorkshire in 1922".

Commemorated on the Astbury War Memorial in St. Mary's P.C Churchyard and
the Cheshire Constabulary War Memorial situated in the foyer of Winsford
Police HQ.
