Born during the September quarter 1888 in the Prescot R.D. - ref: 8b/684,
the youngest son of Richard & Elizabeth Ann Craven (nee Grimshaw).

1891 Census - grocer's Shop, 23 & 24 Brewery Street, Preston, Lancashire. 
Son - aged: 2 - born: Preston, Lancashire.   Head of household - Richard
Craven - Married - aged: 40 - occ: Grocer & Coal Dealer - born: Preston.  
Also Elizabeth Craven - Wife - aged: 42 - born: Rufford, Lancashire.   Plus
4 elder siblings.

1901 Census - 40 East Street, Preston, Lancashire.   Son - aged: 12 - born:
Preston, Lancashire.   Head of household - Richard Craven - Married - aged:
50 - occ: Retired Grocery Dealer - born: Preston.   Also Elizabeth Craven -
Wife - aged: 52 - born: Rufford, Lancashire.   Plus 4 elder siblings.

His father - Richard Craven died in 1909, aged: 57.

1911 Census -   St. Mary's Training College, Brook Green, Hammersmith,
London.   Normal Student - aged: 22 - born: Preston, Lancashire.  Run by
Roman Catholic Priests.     It would appear that he was training to be a
Teacher at a Catholic primary school???

St Mary's was founded in 1850 on the initiative of Cardinal Wiseman. The
Catholic Poor School Committee, which was concerned with providing primary
education to children of poor Catholic people throughout the United
Kingdom, purchased a former girls' school at Brook Green House,
Hammersmith, and adapted it for use as a college with accommodation for 40
adult male students. A legal trust created on 16 July 1851 in connection
with this property and its use as a training college for Catholic
schoolmasters was confirmed in perpetuity.

His mother and 3 siblings were then residing at 59 London Road, Preston.

Married Isabella Wilson Hott during the September quarter 1913 in the
Bishop Aukland R.D. - ref: 10a/498.  Isabella was born at Sunderland in
1889, but I can find no trace of her on any of the census returns.  She
died during the June quarter 1915 in the Bishop Aukland R.D. - ref:
10a/287, aged: 26.  There were no children from the marriage, though she
may have died in childbirth.

4.   This is to commemorate all those buried in various widespread
cemeteries in India where it has proved impossible to maintain them
properly.

CWGC - Son of Richard and Elizabeth Craven; husband of the late Isabella
Wilson Craven, of Shildon, Durham.

There is no obvious connection to Sale, so this may not be the L. Craven
commemorated on the Sale & Ashton Town War Memorial.
