Born during the December quarter 1885 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/650, the son of George Lawson & Grace Lockwood Brown (nee Johnson). 1891 Census - East View, Brooklands Crescent, Sale. Son - aged: 15 - occ: Junior Clerk - born: Stretford. Head of household - George L. Brown - Married - aged: 33 - occ: Small Ware & Manufacturer - born: Manchester. Also - Grace L. Brown - Wife - aged: 33 - born: Manchester. Plus 3 sisters and 2 Domestic Servants. 1901 Census - East View, Brooklands Crescent, Sale. Son - aged: 5 - born: Stretford. Head of household - George L. Brown - Married - aged: 43 - occ: Smallware Merchant - born: Manchester. Also - Grace L. Brown - Wife - aged: 43 - born: Manchester. Plus 3 sisters and 1 Domestic Servant. 1911 Census - East View, Brooklands Crescent, Marsland Road, Sale. Son - Unmarried - aged: 25 - occ: Salesman - born: Stretford. Head of household - George Lawson Brown - Married - aged: 52 - occ: Merchant - born: Manchester. Also - Grace Lockwood Brown - Wife - aged: 52 - born: Manchester. Plus 3 sisters. Married Annie Mary Newton at Sale Chapel (presumably the Sale United Reformed Chapel???) on the 15th May 1911, during the June quarter 1911 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/461. Studied the Organ with Mr. Walter Farrow of St. Paul's Church and became Organist and Choir Master at St. Alban's, Broadheath. Previously an Organist at the Unitarian Church, Knutsford. WO363 - Enlisted from 44 Higson Avenue Chorlton cum Hardy on the 16th June 1916, aged: 30 years 3 months, employed as a Traveller. Height: 5 feet 10 inches - Expanded chest: 34 inches with a 2 inch expansion. Posted to the 11th Battalion, Black Watch. Transferred into the 38th Battalion on the 1st September 1916. Appointed as unpaid Lance Corporal on the 13th October 1916. Admitted to Dunfirmline Auxiliary Hospital on the 3rd December 1916, suffering from pain in his left thigh. Examination revealed tenderness & swelling in the middle and outer side of his left thigh. His temperature was 100ยบ F and he remained in this condition for the next 10 days. On the 14th December there were signs of pus, so Dr. Fleming administered Chloroform and the Doctor - James ????? [whose surname I cannot read] evacuated an abscess. Frank took the anaesthetic well and for the next 2 days his temperature was normal. [most of the rest of the Doctor's report cannot be read as it is so badly burnt] Died of septic endocarditis at the Auxiliary Hospital, Dunfirmline. No trace on SDGW. Death reported in the 29/12/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. He had recently had a successful operation, but pneumonia had set in and he died at Dunfirmline VAD Hospital. Buried together with Private J.G. Forbes, Seaforth Highlanders, an Orkadian who also died of natural causes on the 14th July 1916 aged 18 years. Listed on the SDGW. His CWGC Headstone states that he was Organist and Choirmaster of St. Alban's, Broadheath. Commemorated on St. Alban's Church Memorial, Broadheath. Commemorated on the family gravestone in Sale Cemetery. His father - George Lawson Brown, died on the 23rd September 1922, aged: 63 years. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1918. |
