Born during the December qiarter 1884 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/891,
the only son of Joseph & Mary Elizabeth Broadmeadow (nee Masters).

Wife - aged: 31 - born: Leeds, Yorkshire.   Plus 1 elder sister and an
aunt.

Attended St. Margaret's School, Whalley Range and St. Mary's School, Ashton
on Mersey.     Employed by Messrs. Horrocks, Crewdon & Co. Manchester.     
Member of Sale C.C., Sale RUFC. and the Ashton on Mersey Golf Club.

Enlisted in September 1914.   The 17th Bn. Manchester Rgt were not in
France in 1914, nor the first half of 1915.    They left for France on the
8th November 1915, landing at Boulogne.

They certainly took part in the Battle of the Somme 1916.   They were in
the 90th Brigade, 30th Division.   During the early hours of  01/07 (the
first day of the Battle of the Somme), they assembled in Cambridge Copse,
west of Maricourt  in preparation for their attack on Montauban.     At
08.30hrs they moved forward together with the 16th Manchesters, along the
eastern side of Talus Boisé.    Reached Train Alley and awaited orders to
move on - advance continued up the final slope to Glatz Redoubt, then
through the gaps in Southern Trench and entered Montauban at 10.05hrs -
relieved and to Happy Valley 03/07 - to Oxford Copse on 08/07 - and
attacked Trônes Wood on 09/07 - advanced from Bernafay Wood at 06.00hrs.  
Due to gas shelling, respirators were worn, but the eye pieces kept misting
up with the rain causing loss of direction.   By 08.00hrs, they had reached
the eastern edge of Trônes Wood, but later suffered high casualties from
the German bombardment and were forced to withdraw (less a party of 40 men)
back to Bernafay Wood at  15.00hrs.   The party of 40 men later resisted
the German counter-attack until overwhelmed.     The 30th Division took
3,011 casualties taking Montauban.

Stephen was killed sometime the day after engagement, which was on-going
and his body never recovered.

MIC - France 08/11/1915.    Awarded the 1915 Star, the BWM & VM.

Death reported in the 04/08/1916 editio n of the Altrincham Guardian that
states that his father lived at Priory Rd, Sale, as does his MIC.

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917, which states
that he was a Sergeant.  His MIC states Corporal.

Both Sale Football Club and Sale Cricket Club are unable to locate their
WW1 Memorials.
