Trafford

Born on the 23rd October 1887 at "Wythburn", Brooklands, Sale.   Born
during the December quarter 1`887 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/195, the
youngest son of John Lindley & Jane Carr (nee Hoyle). 

1891 Census - Wythburn, West Grove, Brooklands, Sale.   Son - aged: 3 -
born: Brooklands.  Head of household - John L. Carr - Married - aged: 40 -
occ: Small Ware Manufacturer - born: Manchetser.   Also - Jane Carr - Wife
- aged: 42 - born: Bacup, Lancashire.   Plus 6 siblings and 3 domestic
servants.

1901 Census - Buxton Cllege, Burbage, Buxton.   Boarder - aged: 13 -
Scholar - born: Sale.   His parents and family were then residing at
"Broadoaks"< Washway Road, Sale a 12 roomed house.

1911 Census - "Broadoaks"< Washway Road, Sale.   Son - aged: 23 - occ:
Insurance Clerk - born: Brooklands.  Plus his younger sister and 3 domestic
servants.  His parents together with 1 domestic servant were resident at
"The Paddock", Bishop Monkton, near Leeds.

He attended Buxton College.   Employed in the actuarial Department of the
Refuge Insurance Co, Manchester.

Served in the OTC at Denham & Oxford.

Originally joined the RNVR as an Able Bodied Seaman in November 1914. 
Stationed at Chrystal Palace for some weeks until he was moved to Blandford
as a Dispatch Rider (presumably now with the Army ?).   Commissioned in the
King's (Liverpool Rgt) and drafted to the front in January 1916.

Sailed for the Mediterranean on the 28/02/1915 and then to Gallipoli in
April 1915.    Served throughout the Gallipoli Campaign.   He was the
Personal Orderly to Brigadier General Mercer.

WO374 - Originally served in the Royal Naval Division - No. Z.731.  Height
- 5 feet 8 inches.  Brigadier General David Mercer, G.O.C. 1st Royal Naval
Division, Gallipoli certified that Alfred had landed with the Brigade on
the 27th April 1915 and had served continuously until the evacuation in
January 1916.  He was mentioned in General Sir Ian Hamilton's despatches of
the 22nd September 1915.  Commissioned on the 3rd April 1916.   Letters of
Administration were granted to his father on the 17th April 1918.  His
eastate was valued at £2,942.7. 2d.

The 19/11/1915 edition of the local newspaper reported that he had been
mentioned in dispatches on 22/09/1915 and that he was still at Gallipoli.

Graham Maddocks's book on the Liverpool Rgt states that he was in the 17th
Bn ???

Death reported in the 20/04/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.

The CWGC listed the parents as living at The Elms, Sale.

Commemorated on the family gravestone in Sale Cemetery - K637.

His father John Lindley Carr, who was a J.P. died 25/11/1918 aged 68 years
and his mother Jane died 02/02/1924 aged 76 years.  The M.I. on the family
gravestone in Sale Cem states that his father was "of Timperley".
