Born during the December quarter 1891 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/726, the eldest son of Charles William & Kate Mitchell (nee Anderson). 1901 Census - 15 Bland Street, Moss Side, Manchester. Son - aged: 9 - born: Stretford. Head of household - Charles W. Mitchell - Married - aged: 37 - occ: Cotton Cloth Salesman - born: Salford. Also - Kate Mitchell - Wife - aged: 43 - born: Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Plus 3 younger siblings. 1911 Census - 4 Warrener Street, Sale. Son - aged: 19 - occ: Warehouseman - born: Stretford. Head of household - Charles W. Mitchell - Married - aged: 47 - occ: Salesman - born: Salford. Also - Kate Mitchell - Wife - aged: 53 - born: Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Plus 2 younger brothers. The 17th Battalion, Manchester Regiment (2nd City Bn) served with the 90th Brigade, 30th Division on the Somme. They were involved from the first day of the Battles. On the 12th October 1916, the Battalion moved forward to the notorious, Delville Wood and attacked on Bayonnet Trench. Small parties entered the objective, but later were forced to retire. Alec was killed during the action. SDGW lists his number as simply 8241. M.I. - "Grant him O Lord thine eternal peace". | |||
