Born during the June quarter 1921 in the Easington R.D. - ref: 10a/1181, the son of Frederick and Alice Elizabeth Slee (nee Oliver). Listed as G. Slee on Cenotaph. During the Battle of France 10th - 20th May 1940, whilst on Patrol covering Den Haag – Delft – Rotterdam in Hurricane N2405, he was shot down over France by a Me109 of JG51. *The CWGC records state that he was flying with 17 Sqn - which, at that time, was based at RAF Hawkinge. However, "Fighter Command Losses - 2nd WW" states that he was with 56 Sqn??? W.e.f. 28th February 1940, 56 Sqn was based at RAF North Weald, with detachments to RAF Manston, RAF Biggin Hill, Vity-en-Artois, Norrent-Fontes and Boulogne. George's grave is the only CWGC's grave in this cemetery. |
