Born during the September quarter 1878 in the Knaresborough R.D. - ref: 9a/100, the son of Richard and Jane Varley, (nee Wood). 1881 Census - High Street, Scriven with Tentergate, Knaresborough, Yorkshire. Son - aged: 2 - born: Scriven with Tentergate, Yorkshire. Head of household - Richard Varley - Married - aged: 43 - occ: Gardner - born: Galphay, near Ripon, Yorkshire. Also - Jane Varley - Wife - aged: 30 - born: Beckwithshaw, near Pannal, Yorkshire. Plus 1 paternal aunt. 1891 Census - No Trace of Herbert or his parents. 1901 Census - No Trace. His parents were still residing at High Street, Knaresborough, Yorkshire at that time. Married Jessie Partington. Teasdale during the December quarter 1910 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/407. 1911 Census - 89 New Street, Altrincham. Boarder - Married - aged: 31 - occ: Dress Skirt Warehouseman - born Knaresborough, Yorkshire. Also - Jessie G. Varley - Wife - aged: 31 - born: Lower Broughton, Salford. He was boarded with Humphrey & Elinor Roberts. Their marriage record states that Jessie's middle initial is 'P', not 'G'. His parents are still residing at the High St. Knaresborough, Yorkshire Employed Oxendale & Co. Manchester Employers' Roll of Honour. Death reported in the Stalybridge Reporter dated 25th August 1917. This refers to his widow Mrs. J. Varley and states that he was well known in "the district" (Stalybridge) being on the staff of Lt. Scott at the Ladysmith Barracks serving in the 11th Bn Manchester Rgt. Later transferred into the Lancashire Fusiliers and together with Private Leather was sent to France. where they were both killed on the same day. Herbert was aged: 40 years and a native of Knaresborough, Yorkshire. In civvy street, he was employed as a Warehouseman at Messrs. Oxendale's. CWGC - Son of Richard and Jane Varley, of Knaresborough, Yorks; husband of Jessie Roberts (formerly Varley), of 42, Ganbrook St., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancs. M.I. - THY WILL BE DONE. Pension Records - Dependent - Jessie Partington Varley (widow) - Church Inn, Hurst, Ashton upon Lyne, Awarded a £5 Grant on the 1st September 1918 and a weekly pension of 13/9d w.e.f. the 12th February 1918. Jessie was born on the 3rd January 1887. Jessie married an Arthur Roberts in late 1920. |
