Trafford

Born at Broughton, Salford on the 21st April 1886, the birth being
registered during the June quarter 1886 in the Salford R.D. - ref: 8d/123,
the son of Joseph & Sarah Jane Thornley (nee Ridgway).

1891 Census - 83 Clarence Street, Broughton, Salford.    Son - aged: 4 -
Scholar - born: Salford.   Head of household - Joseph Thornley - Married -
aged: 29 - occ: Pattern Card Maker - born: Salford.   Also - Sarah J.
Thornley - Wife - aged: 33 - born: Openshaw, Manchester.   Plus 1 younger
brother and 2 half siblings.

His father - Joseph Thornley died in 1897, aged: 36.

1901 Census - 34 Teneriffe Street, Broughton, Salford.   Son - aged: 14 -
occ: Office boy - born: Salford.   Head of household - Sarah Jane Thornley
- Widow - born: Openshaw, Manchester.  Plus 2 siblings, 2 half siblings and
his paternal grandfather.

1911 Census - 13 Manley Street, Broughton, Salford.   Son - aged: 24 - occ:
Hardware Buyer (Shipping) - born: Salford.   Head of household - Sarah Jane
Thornley - Widow - aged: 54 - born: Salford.   Plus 3 siblings.

Employed by Messrs. Schill Seebohn & Co. Ltd. Chile, where he was in charge
of their Hardware Department.  On the outbreak of war, he returned to
England and enlisted into the Public Schools Battalion, The Welsh
Fusiliers.   He underwent training at Llandudno & Bedford, obtaining a
Commission on the 23rd August 1915.  Stationed at Brocton, he was chosen to
undergo a course in Physical Training at Aldershot.  He went to the Staff
College at Camberley as an Instructor in Physical Training & Bayonet
Fighting.   He later rejoined his regiment at Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire and
served with the British Expeditionary Force in France from September 1916. 
 He was killed by a shell and buried 100 yards left of Hamel on the
Mesnil-Hamel Road.

Married - Emma Budgen at Ashton upon Mersey on the 4th March 1916, the
marriage being registered during the March quarter 1916 in the Bucklow R.D.

He resided at 62 Carlton Road, Ashton upon Mersey, when his Probate was
granted to his widow, Emma Thornley and Mill Manager, Paul Ridgeway at
London on the 12th April 1917.  His Estate was valued at £341. 6s 0d. 
Post War, his widow was residing at 60 Raglan Road, Sale.
