Born during the March quarter 1888 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/697, the son of James & Margaret Thorpe (nee Jackson). Baptised on the 8th April 1888 in St. Paul's P.C., Withington. Son of James & Margaret Thorpe. Father's occupation - Traveller. 1891 Census - 22 Burton Road, Withington, Manchester - Son - aged: 3 - born: Withington. Head of household - Margaret Thorpe - Married - aged: 33 - occ: Charwoman - born: Withington. Plus 1 lodger. No Trace of his father. 1901 Census - 14 Hill Street, Withington, Manchester. Son - aged: 13 - born: Withington. Head of household - Margaret Thorpe - Married - aged: 43 - occ: Laundress - born: Withington. 1911 Census - 8 Bradshaw Avenue, Withington, Manchester. Son - aged: 23 - occ: Commercial Clerk - born: Withington. Head of household - Margaret Thorpe - Widow - aged: 53 - No occupation - born: Withington. The record shows that Margaret had produced three children but two of them had died by 1911. WO363 - No Trace. Formerly 5132 - 7th Battalion, Manchester Rgt. Grandson of the late John Jackson, Green Lane, Timperley. His Aunt Annie, lived at Arcot, Bowdon. Commemorated on the private family (grand-mother's) gravestone in Hale Cemetery. M.I. - "The supreme sacrifice". M.I. in France "Supreme sacrifice, his life". Buried with Sergeant A.J.F. Pirouet - Royal Irish Rifles. Death reported in the 22/09/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. CWGC - Son of James & Margaret Thorpe of 18 Cooper Street, Withington, Manchester. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917, which states that he lived at "Arcot", Bowdon. Pension Records - John Jackson Thorpe - Loyal North Lancashire Rgt. Died od wounds on the 9th September 1916. Dependant: Mrs. Margaret Thorpe, 61 Rippingham Road, Withington, Manchester. Awarded a weekly pension of 12/6d w.e.f. the 17th July 1917. Having lost all of her family, his mother died in 1924, aged: 69. |
