In 1891 Herman's parents resided at  20 Temple Road, Sale.   His father -
Carls C. Schaefer was - aged: 28 - occ: Bank Manager - born Hulme,
Manchester.   His mother - Fanny S. Schaefer was aged: 26 - born:
Stretford.  Also listed was his brother - Carl C Shaefer Jnr - aged: 10
months - born: Sale.   Plus 1 domestic servant.     By 1893 his parents had
moved to Chorlton.

Born during the June quarter 1893 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/946, the
son of Carl Christian & Fanny Sophia Schaefer (nee Taylor).   His mother
undoubtedly died in childbirth with Herman, as she died the same quarter
1893 - aged: 28.   Herman's birth was registered as "Male" (no forename)
Shaefer.

Following his mother's death, Herman's Paternal grandmother stepped in to
provide a family home for her son and two grandsons.

1901 Census - 212 Palmerston Street, North Manchester.    Grandson - aged:
7 - born: Manchester.    Head of household - Elizabeth Schaefer - Widow -
aged: 62 - occ: Spirit & Beer Seller - born: Manchester.    Also - Carl C
Schaefer Snr. - Son - Widower - occ: Brewer's Clerk - born: Manchester.   
Plus his elder brother Carl C Schaefer Jnr - aged: 10 - born: Sale.

His father died in 1906 - aged: 43 and the two, now orphaned lads were
taken in  by an uncle and aunt.

1911 Census -  9 Henderson Street, Levenshulme, Manchester.     Nephew -
aged: 17 - occ: Grocer's Assistant - born: Manchester.   Head of household
- George Wilson Hughes - Married - aged: 45 - occ: Grey Cloth Salesman -
born: Manchester.   Also his wife - Emma Elizabeth Hughes and their three
children.   Plus Herman's elder brother Carl C Schaefer Jnr - aged: 20 -
occ: Warehouseman - born: Sale.

Killed at Manchester Hill situated between St. Quentin & Savy, Somme.

Commemorated on the Family Grave A.186 Sale (Brooklands) Cemetery (per
M&LFHS) - In affectionate remembrance of Casper Georg SCHAEFER, who died
March 14th 1880 aged 48 years. (verse). Also Elizabeth, his wife, who died
Jan. 22nd, 1910 aged 71 years. Carl Christian SCHAEFER, who died Oct. 12th
1906, aged 43 years. Also In loving memory of his sons, Carl & Herman, of
the 16th. Batt. Man. Reg., killed in action in 1917 & 1918, aged 28 and 25
years. Stone in front: [ ] Sophia [wife of ?] Carl Christian SCHAEFER, died
20th April, 1893 in her 29th year.
