Born on th 9th November 1889 at Hornsey, Middlesex. The birth being registered during the March quarter in the Islington R.D. - ref: 1b/191. The son of George Eddell & Mary Eliza Smales (nee Berry). His father - George Eddell Smales died in 1890 in the Islington R.D. George was the son of a Potato Merchant based at Hornsey. 1891 Census - "Holmwood", Northenden Road, Sale. Grandson - aged: 1 - born: Islington, Middlesex. His mother and 4 young sisters were listed. His mother - Mary E. Smales - Widow - aged: 29 - occ: Living on own means - born: Cheetham, Manchester. Also listed were Mary's 3 Berry brothers, her parents are not listed. 1901 Census - "Holmwood", Northenden Road, Sale. He and his mother ands siblings are residing with his widowed maternal grandmother. Mary E. Smales - Widow - aged: 39 - born: Manchester. Plus his 4 sisters. 1911 Census - No Trace, so it appears that the family has already emigrated to Canada as so many did at this time, enticed by offers of free land to farm. Member of Sale C.C. M.I. - "Thy will be done". He was residing at Govan, Saskatchewan at the time of his enlistment. His Canadian attestation form, signed on the 13th December 1916, at Winnipeg, Manitoba, states that he was aged 27 years 1 month, 5 feet 10 inches in height, had a 36/3 inch chest (fully expanded). His complexion was: dark, his eyes: brown and his hair: brown. The papers also state that he was a Farmer by trade and that, he had previously served in the 79th C.R. of C. Militia. Religion - Methodist. He was unmarried and listed his mother - Mary Smales, 10 Woburn Place, Russell Square, London as his next of kin. |
