Born during the March quarter 1897 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/170,
the son of Thomas & Catherine Swindley (nee Emberry).

1901 Census - 27 Hyde Grove, Sale.    Son - aged: 4 - born: Ashton upon
Mersey.    Head of household - Thomas Swindley - Married - aged: 41 - occ:
Day Gardener - born: Stretford.   Also Catherine Swindley - Wife - aged: 41
- born: Devonshire.    Plus 3 elder siblings.

1911 Census - 375 Third Street, Trafford Park, Manchester.    Son - aged:
14 - occ: Apprentice Engineer - born: Ashton upon Mersey.   Head of
household - Thomas Swindley - Married - aged: 30 - occ: Day Gardener -
born: Stretford.   Also Catherine Swindley - Wife - aged: 31 - born:
Devonshire.    Plus 4 siblings and 1 step-sister.

WO 363 - Enlisted at Salford on the 9th November 1914, into the 1/8th Bn,
Lancashire Fusiliers. 5 feet 6 inches in height - weighed 128 lb - chest
measurements of 33 to 35 inches.   Posted to Egypt on the 3rd August 1915,
then onto Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915.  Reported sick with Dysentery
on the 16th October 1915.   Boarded the Hospital Ship Aquitania on the 25th
November 1915 bound for England.   Granted a furlough from the 15th to the
25th January 1916.  Note states that he might be fit for service overseas
within 3 months.

Transferred to the 2/5th Bn on the 7th December 1916 and left Folkestone
the following day bound for Boulogne, France, arriving at Etaples on the
9th December 1916..   Promoted to unpaid Lance Corporal on the 30th January
1917 and was paid from the 1st August 1917.

His mother - Catherine Swindley died in 1917, aged: 46.

Killed on the first day of the Battle of Menin Road.
