Born on the 25th May 1890, the birth being registered during the September
quarter 1890 in the Ecclesall Bierlow R.D. (Sheffield) - ref: 9c/357, the
eldest son of Lionel Copley F. & Eliza Smith (nee Stockdale).

1891 Census - Bridge House, Millbridge, Skipton, Yorkshire.    Grandson -
aged: 10 months - born: Sheffield.   Head of household was his grand
parents - William & Eliza Stockdale.    Also his mother - Eliza Smith -
Married - aged: 31 - born: Skipton.  Plus his elder sister, an uncle and 1
servant.

His father was then residing at 29 Oakdale Road, Ecclesall Bierlow,
Sheffield together with his three daughters from a previous marriage
(Lionel's half-sisters), plus 1 servant.

1901 Census - Summerseat, Hipperholme, Halifax, West Yorkshire.    Son -
aged: 11 - born: Sheffield.    Head of household - Lionel C. Smith -
Married - aged: 51 - occ: Sub Inspector, Education Dept - born: Norton St
Andrews, Suffolk.    Also - Eliza Smith - Wife - aged: 41 - born: Skipton. 
 Plus 3 siblings, an aunt and 1 servant.    The half-sisters are not with
the family.

Attended Manchester Grammar School between 1905 and 1909, before
progressing to Mancheter Technical School where he studied Electrical
Engineering.   In his spare time, he played rugby for Sale Rugby Club, his
other interest being motor cycling.

household - Lionel Copley Smith - Married - aged: 61 - occ: School
Inspector Sub Inspector - born: Norton St Andrews, Suffolk.    Also - Eliza
Smith - Wife - aged: 51 - born: Skipton.   Plus 4 siblings and 1 servant.

In early 1914, he attended the marriage of his sister - Dorothy Smith to
Jack Cunliffe, who had just passed his law exams and was articled to Slater
Heelis, Solicitors.  Jack was also to be killed during WW1.

WO 363 - Lionel enlisted at Birmingham on the 6th August 1914 - 2 days
after the outbreak of War.  He was immediately given the rank of Corporal. 
He served at Home from the 6th August 1914 until the 16th August 1914 when
he was posted to France.  [The Army was desperately short of Dispatch
Riders, so he was, in effect whisked off to France, within 10 days of
enlisting].  He served in the Motor Cyclist Section of 'L' Signal Company
of the Royal Engineers.  Promoted to the Rank of Sergeant.   Then w.e.f.
the 29th January 1915, he was given a Commission as Second Lieutenant.   

The 25/06/1915 edition of the local newspaper reported that he was serving
as a motor cyclist special reserve and had been mentioned in dispatches.

Death registered during the March quarter 1919 in the Bucklow R.D - ref:
8a/372 - aged: 28.   Registered simply as Lionel Smith.  His primary cause
of death was Endiocarditis, and infection of the inner linings of the heart
chambers and valves and compounded by Influenza.

Commemorated on the family gravestone in St. Martin's Ref: 1.158.

The British School & University Memorial Rolls state:-  Son of Lionel C.
Smith, Oakfield, Ashton-on-Mersey.  Born 1890 at Sheffield.  Attended
Carlisle Grammar School, Reading Grammar School, Manchester Grammar School
& Manchester University - 1910; BSc. Tech., 1914. Enlisted August 1914;
Gazetted November 1914; R. E. (L Signal Company ); Captain; France;
Dispatches; O. C. Dispatch Rider Letter Serv. Died of illness contracted on
service, 23rd March 1919.

His father Lionel died 17/08/1937 and his mother Eliza died 06/11/1940.
