Born during the December quarter 1871, in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. ref:
8c/545, the son of William & Hannah Summers (nee Johnson). 

1881 Census - Dalton's Buildings, 90 King Street, Stretford.     Son -
aged: 9 - Scholar - born: Stretford.  Head of household - William Summers -
Married - aged: 45 - occ: Gardener - born: Broughton, Lancashire.    Also -
Hannah Summers - Wife - aged: 45 - 0cc: Laundress - born: Stretford.  Plus
8 siblings.

1891 Census - 13 Silver Street, Irlam, Lancashire.    Son - aged: 19 - occ:
General Labourer - born: Stretford.    Head of household - William Summers
- Married - aged: 55 - occ: Gardener - born: Broughton, Lancashire.    Also
- Hannah Summers - Wife - aged: 55 - born: Stretford.  Plus 4 siblings and
1 nephew.

WO97 - Enlisted into the Lincoln Rgt at Lincoln on the 28th November 1892 -
Service No. 3391.   He enlisted for 7 years service with 5 years in
Reserve.   Recorded as being employed as a Miner's Labourer, born at
Stretford, Lancashire.   He was 5 feet 4 3/4 inches in height, he weighed
120 lb.  His chest measurements were 32 1/2 to 34 1/2 inches.  He had a
Dark complexion, Brown eyes, Brown hair and was a Wesleyan.

Transferred to the 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Rgt on the 17th February
1893.   Granted 1st G.C.P. (Good Conduct Pay) on the 3rd March 1898 and 2nd
G.C.P on the 4th March 1900.   On the 18th October 1901, he agreed to
extended service to complete 12 years, accepting a bounty of £104.    Of
this £16. 10s. 0d being in lieu of furlough to England.  Agreed to
complete 21 years service on the 8th October 1904.   Awarded 3rd G.C.P. on
the 28th November 1904.   Discharged after 12 years service on the 28th
March 1905.   Attested again with the Lincolnshire Rgt on the 19th July
1905.

1901 Census - Serving in India.   His father, now widowed was residing at 1
Gladstone Road, Urmston with with his son - Walter ad family.   He was
recorded as a 75 year old Jobbing Gardener.

Service - Home: 28/11/1892 to 11/12/1893.   Straits Settlements: 12/12/1893
to 18/04/1895.    Malta: 19/04/1895 to 03/02/1897.    Egypt: 04/02/1897 to
17/10/1898.   India: 18/10/1898 to 24/03/1905.    Home: 25/03/1905 to
28/03/1903.

Whilst in Egypt he was involved in the Nile Expedition.   Fought in the
Battle of Atbara on the 8th April 1898 and the Battle of Khartoum on the
2nd September 1898.

He attested again with the Lincolnshire Rgt. on the 19th February 1905. 

His mother died in 1899, aged: 61 and his father in 1912, aged: 77..

Died in the 3rd Western General Hospital, (based at Cardiff Infirmary),
Cardiff, Wales.     Buried 16/08/1916 - Burial No. 7,726.   Death
registered during the September quarter 1916 in the Cardiff R.D. - ref:
11a/344, aged: 42.

His nephew - Fred summers died of wounds received in 1918 whilst serving
with the 7th Bn. Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Rgt).
