Born in Renfrew, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1900, the son of Samuel & Ellen Stewart. 1901 Census - 1 Glebe Street, Renfrew, Renfrewshire. Son - aged: 1 - born: Renfrew. Head of household - Samuel Stewart - Married - aged: 25 - occ: Ship's Joiner - born: Renfrew. Also - Ellen Stewart - Wife - aged: 24 - born: Ireland. Plus 1 elder brother. His father died c1905, his mother - Ellen Stewart married William Turkington c1907. 1911 Census - 66 Chester Street, Gorton, Manchester. Step-son - aged: 11 - Scholar - born: Renfrew, Renfrewshire. Head of household - William Turkington - Married - aged: 34 - occ: Store Keeper - born: Kilbride, Co. Antrin, Ireland. Also - Ellen Turkington - Married - aged: 35 - born: Ahoghill, co. Antrim, Ireland. Plus 2 brothers and 2 step-siblings. The 2/8th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers were formed at Mossborough in August 1914 and moved to Southport, part of the 197th Brigade, 66th Division. I have no record as to exactly when George enlisted, but in May 1915, the Battalion moved to Crowborough and then Tunbridge Wells. In March 1916, they moved to the Hydrabad Barracks at Colchester. From the Battalion was posted to the Western Front, landing at Havre on the 28th February 1917. Listed as G. Stewart Turkington on the Trafford Park Village War Memorial, where he is listed under the Church Lads Brigade Section. Listed as Pte. G.S. Turkington on the Stretford Town War Memorial and the Stretford Town WW1 Memorial Book. Listed as G.Stewart on the Metro-Vics War Memorial. French M.I. - "Gone but not forgotten".
