Born during the March quarter 1917 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/281, the second son of Samuel & Eliza Annie Shufflebottom (nee Eccleston). Attended Springfield School, Sale High School and Manchester Grammar School. Entered his father's business. Played football for St. Mary's team, who won the Altrincham and District Junior Cup 1937/38. Joined the Army in January 1940. Landed in France on D-Day + 2. Attached to the 1st Bn. Herefordshire Rgt. Listed as A. Shufflebottom on St, Mary's Memorial and as A.V. Shufflebottom on Sale Cenotaph. Engaged to Miss Kay Farrell. Death reported in the 20/04/1945 edition of the Sale & Stretford Guardian. Commemorated on the family grave in Sale Cemetery. M.I. - Nobly he answered his country's call". Name recorded as SNUFFLEBOTTON by the CWGC. |
