Born during the December quarter 1921 in the Llanfyllin R.D. - ref: 11b/284, the son of Joseph & Alice Mary Roberts (nee Durnall). 1939 National Registration - Coldstream Cottages, Wood Lane, Mobberley. Joseph Roberts - Married - born on the 25th August 1884 - occ: Teamsman on Farm. Alice Mary Roberts - Married - born on the 5th September 1888 - occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties. John Edward Roberts - Single - born on the 4th January 1914 - occ: Teamsman on Farm. Joseph Roberts - Single - born on the 12th September 1921 - occ: Cowman on Farm. There were three other adult members of the Roberts family residing here, plus 4 redacted records. On the night of the 23rd September 1944, Joseph was serving as the mid-upper gunner aboard a Lancaster Mk.I - No.ME829 AS-G. Flying with 166 Sqn, they took off From RAF Kirmington at 18.40 hrs bound for a bombing raid on Neuss. The a/c crashed at 23.05 hrs at the corner of Ulandstrasse and Schumanstrasse at Dusseldorf. Three of the crew were taken prisoner - two were buried in the Reischwald Forest Cemetery and the two Gunners are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
