Born at Norton Lodge, Wash Lane, Timperley.on the 13th April 1892, the
birth being registered during the June quarter 1892 in the Altrincham R.D.
- ref: 8a/182, the youngest son of Edward James & Annie Newton Riley (nee
Treadgoldf)    His father's occupation was given as a Cotton Merchant.

Timperley.   Head of household - Edward James Riley - Married - aged: 56 -
occ: Calico Salesman - born: Accrington, Lancashire..  Also - Annie Newton
Riley - Wife - aged: 44 - born: Great Goresby, Lincolnshire.   Plus 3 elder
brothers.

1911 Census - Beech Holme, Moss Lane, Ashton upon Mersey.   Son - aged: 18

His father died in 1917, aged: 72.   He had three brothers:- Arthur
Treadgold Riley - b.1883.  Edward Lawrence Riley - b.1887.   William
Douglas Riley - b.1889, all residing at The Hollies in August 1918.

WO374/57672 - He was medically examined at Room 38, Houldsworth Hall,
Deansgate, Manchester on the 26/10/1915.   By the 02/11/1915, he was
stationed at Clipstone Camp.   Dudley E. Stout, Clerk in Holy Orders, 30
Whitefield Road, Ashton on Mersey, gave him his character reference when he
applied for his commission.    He had previously served as a Cadet in the
Manchester University's OTC.   He was 5 feet 7½ inches in height and was
educated privately.   Commissioned 03/11/1915

M.I. - "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God".

His death was reported in the 12/09/1916 edition of the Altrincham
Guardian.   The 22/09/1916 edition of the local newspaper reports that his
younger brother - 2nd Lt. W.D. Riley, Cheshire Rgt had been wounded, as had
his elder brother - Lt. E.L. Riley who was slightly wounded on the 1st July
and was also suffering from shell shock and para-typhoid.
