Born on the 9th May 1888, the birth being registered during the June
quarter 1888 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/889, the son of 

1891 Census - 13 Guide Lane, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire.    Son - aged:
2 - born: Audenshaw, Lancashire.   Head of household - John J. Riley -
Married - aged: 38 - occ: Medical Assistant - born: Oldham.   Also - Sarah
J. Riley - Wife - aged: 28 - born: Stockport.   Plus 1 elder brother and
his maternal grandmother.

1901 Census - 16 Buckley Street, Reddish, Stockport.  Son - aged: 13 -
born: Audenshaw.   Head of household - John J. Riley - Married - aged: 47 -
occ: Medical Assistant - born: Oldham.   Also - Sarah J. Riley - Wife -
aged: 39 - born: Stockport.   Plus 3 siblings and 1 visitor.

Educated at Audenshaw Higher Grade School

His father - John James Riley died in 1903, aged: 50.

1911 Census - No Trace.     His widowed mother was then residing at 8
Warwick Road, Stretford with three of her chiildren and 4 boarders.

WO339/127925 - Enlisted at Ashton under Lyne on 10th December 1916.   He
was aged: 27 years 7 months and was 5 feet, 6 inches in height.   He
weighed 145 lb and his chest measurements were 36 - 38 1/2 inches.  
Employed as a Commercial Traveller with Herbert Whitworth Ltd.   Posted to
the 26th Battalion, Manchester Rgt on the 16th March 1916.   He made his
Will at  the Altcar Camp on the 23rd June 1916 leaving everything to his
mother - Mrs. Jennie Riley 8 Warwick Road North, Old Trafford.   Embarked
at Folkestone on the 24th June 1916, bound for Boulogne.  Arrived at
Etaples on the 25th.   Posted to the 19th Battalion, Manchester Rgt In the
Field on the 25th June 1916.

Admitted to No. 13 C.C.S. (Casualty Clearing Station), suffering from a
shrapnel wound to his right elbow and sent down to No. 8 General Hospital
the next day.   Sent to 30 I.B.D. (Infantry Base Depot), Etaples on the
27th July 1916 and arrived there on the 29th.   Rejoined Manchester Rgt in
the field on the 17th August 1916.   Appointed Lances Corporal (paid) on
the 20th September 1916.   Wounded in action on the 19th October 1916 and
admitted into No. 15 C.C.S. with G.S.W (Gun Shot Wound) in right eye the
following day.   Sent down to No. 38 C.C.S. and then down to No. 18 General
Hospital on the 22nd September 1916.  Arrived at No. 20 I.B.D. Etaples on
the 1st November 1916.   Rejoined his Battalion in the field on the 4th
January 1917.   Appointed Corporal on the 19th January 1917.   Left his
Battalion to report to the War Office in respect of a Commission.

As a Corporal in the 19th Manchester Rgt, he was sent to No. 6 Officer
Cadet School at Oxford on the 10th August 1917.   Admitted to hospital in
England on the 5th April 1918.

Originally buried at a point about 1,000 yards south of Haverincourt, late
reinterred at Hermies Hill Cemetery.  In August 1919 - his mother - Jennie
Riley was residing at 129 Broadbottom Row, Mottram in Longdendale,
Cheshire.

Letters of Administration were granted on the 29th January 1919 by the
Manchester Probate Office.  His Estate was valued at £235, 4s. 3d.
