Born on the 9th January 1922, the birth being registered during the March quarter 1922 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/307, the son of Edward Lawrence & Emily Annie Riley (nee Cole). 1939 National Registration - 10 Ringley School Boarding House Hillmorton Road, Rugby, Warwickshire. Scholar - Born on the 9th January 1922. His father Emily Annie Cole in 1919 and resided at 16 Beaufort Avenue, Sale from 1919 until at least 1943. His mother died in 1928, aged: 36 during the birth of their second son - Peter Lawrence Cole Riley, after which his father married Margaret W. Shearer in 1930. Later , he attended Rugby School and joined their O.T.C. He was also in the Home Guard there. He volunteered for the RA in June 1941 and went overseas in December 1941. The 16/04/43 edition of the local newspaper reports that their missing son (presumably had been missing for some time (since the fall of Singapore perhaps?) was a POW in the Fukuoka Camp in Japan. (In fact, he was already dead). Died as a POW. The 27/08/43 edition reports his death from Colitis. His father was a Captain in WW1 and was awarded the Military Medal. DuringWW2, he was a Police Inspector with the Cheshire Constabulary. Commemorated on he family gravestone in Sale Cemetery - K.663. Probate was granted to his father and his Estate was valued at £3,383. 6s. 0d. |
