Trafford

Born on the 21st May 1910 in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1910, the son of
William Charles & Clara Martha Pendal (nee Williams).   His father was a
Foreman Timberman, employed at the Robinson Deep Gold Mine Co. Ltd at
Johannesburg and died there on the 5th September 1911.

Now widowed,  Herford's mother - Clara Martha Pendal returned to England
with her two year old son.  They embarked at Cape Town 
on the 25th May 1912, aboard the S.S. Kinfauns Castle, arriving at
Portsmouth.

Married Doris Marie Tankard during the September quarter 1935 in the
Edmonton R.D. - ref: 3a/2550.  Doris was born at Hackney, London on the 5th
August 1906, the daughter of Comedian Victor Tankard and Alice Maud Marion
Tankard.   Herford and Doris had one daughter - Susan M.L. Pendal, born
during the December quarter 1942.  Doris never remarried and died at
Haringay, London in 1991.

Tankard - born: 26th June 1884.

M-V's War Memorial Book - Joined the Metro-Vicker's Company as a Saleman in
August 1937 and employed in the Lamp Sales Department, Manchester.   Joined
the RAFVR in which he held the rank of Sergeant.    Mobilised in September
1939 and later promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer.   Killed in an
aircraft accident in England in August 1942.

On the 23rd August 1942, flying in a Blackburn Botha Mk.I - No.L6318 from
No.3 School of General Reconnaissancehe, RAF Squires Gate near Blackpool,
Lancashire, W.O. Pendal and four other crew memebrs took off for a
navigation exercise.   Whilst flying over the north Wales coast, the a/c
entered low cloud and struck the north eastern slopes of Tal-y-Fan above
the Conwy valley.  All five of the crew were killed in the crash.   A
search party from No.9 AOS at RAF Penrhos eventually found the a/c and
recovered the bodies the next day.

No 3 School of General Reconnaisance was based at Squires Gate - now
Blackpool airport and was part of Coastal Command.   It had mainly Botha
and Anson aircraft on strength and trained crews in mariime reconnaisance.

His death was registered during the September quarter 1942 in the Conway
R.D. - ref: 11b/466.  Registerd as Harford Linton Pendal.

His mother - Clara Marie Pendal died at Ipswich in 1966, aged: 77.  Her
address was given as 39, Westerfield Road, Ipswich, Suffolk.
