Born during the December quarter 1921 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/299, the son of Sidney Alfred & Elsie Kate Nurse (nee Haward). Flt. Sgt Nurse took off from RAF Linton-on-Ouse in a Lancaster Bomber No. DS844 - EQ-X at 20.48 hours on the 24th February 1944 for an operation to Schweinfurt, Germany. The aircraft is believed to have been shot down into the River Rhine. The crew of seven piloted by Pilot Officer H. Sherlock DFC were killed on this mission. Three of them, including the pilot and Flt. Sgt Nurse, are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, the other four rest in the Dürnbach War Cemetery. A total of 35 British Bombers were lost that night on the Schweinfurt raid. |
