Born during the March quarter 1876 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/9_0, the son of William Henry & Hannah Mayers (nee Morton). 1881 Census - 3 Parsonage Street, Hulme, Manchester. Son - aged: 5 - born: Manchester. Head of household - William Mayers - Married - aged: 31 - occ: Labourer at Iron Works - born: Manchester. Also - Hannah Mayer - Wife - aged: 26 - occ: Machinist - born: Manchester. 1891 Census - 179 Church Street, (Butchers Shop next door to the Post Office), Pendleton, Salford. Grandson - aged: 15 - occ: Engreavers Apprentice - born: Manchester. Head of household - Hannah Merton - Widow - aged: 58 - occ: Butcher - born: Manchester. Also Hannah Mayers - Daughter (William's mother) - Married - aged: 38 - occ: Dressmaker - born: Manchester. His father was residing at 7, Chatsworth Street, Chorlton Upon Medlock, Manchester and was listed as Single - Lodger - aged: 42 - occ: General Labourer - born: Manchester. 1901 Census - His father is now residing at 41, Newcastle Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester - Boarder - Married - aged: 53 - occ: Mason's Labourer - born:Manchester. The farm featured in the action on 30 October 1899 in what has been called the Battle of Ladysmith, Farquhar's Farm, Lombards Kop or Modder Spruit. Mr. Joseph Farquhar was mayor of Ladysmith during the siege of that town. The siege of Ladysmith took place between the 2nd November 1899 and 27th February 1900. Died of Enteric Fever (Typhoid). Commemorated on the family gravestone in Sale Cemetery - I.509. His Mother's maiden name was Morton - his parents married at Manchester R.D. - Mar Qtr 1875. His grave in South Africa, is marked with a metal cross in one of the better kept ABW cemeteries. |
