Born on 3rd August 1889 in the Manchester R.D. - ref: 8d/301, the eldest son of Alexander James and Sarah Alice Mills (nee Darlington). 1891 Census – 32 Staveley Street, Harpurhey, Manchester. Son - aged: 1 - born: Harpurhey, Manchester. Head of household – Alexander J. Mills – Married - aged: 25 - occ: Printer - born: Manchester. Also – Sarah A. Mills - Wife - aged: 20 - born: Manchester. Attended Springfield Road School, followed by Sale Central School. 1901 Census – Elm Grove, Ashton upon Mersey. Son - aged: 11 – Child - born: Manchester. Head of household – Alexander J. Mills – Married - aged: 35 - occ: Clerk in Shipping House - born: Hulme, Manchester. Also – Sarah A. Mills - Wife - aged: 30 - born: Manchester. Plus 1 younger brother. 1911 Census – 15 Meadows Road, Sale. Son – aged: 21 – occ: Warehouse Clerk – born: Manchester. Head of household – Alexander James Mills – Married - aged: 45 - occ: Warehouseman Cotton - born: Manchester. . Also – Sarah Alice Mills - Wife - aged: 40 - born: Manchester. Also one younger brother Employed by S.L. Behrens Ltd (Merchants), Manchester Joined The Manchester Regiment as a Private in 1914. Served in the 16th Battalion and promoted to Lance Corporal before taking part in 1917 in the Battle of Arras. Posted as missing presumed killed in the Second Battle of the Scarpe on 23rd April 1917. Member of the Ashton on Mersey Congregational Church. Death reported in the 08/02/1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. He had served for two years in France.
