Trafford

Born during the June quarter 1891 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/188a,
the son of William Scott & Mary Matthews (nee Dunster).   William was from
Newry, Co. Down, Ireland, Mary was from Timperley.

At the time of the 1891 Census, his parents were residing at Woodfield
Grove, Glebelands Road, Ashton upon Mersey.  His father was a 36 year old
Coachman born at Newry, Co. Down and his mother was aged: 37 and born at
Timperley.

1901 Census - Southern Road, Ashton upon Mersey.   Son - aged: 10 - born:
Sale.   Head of household - William Matthews - Married - aged: 45 - occ:
Coachman (Not Domestic) - born: Ireland.   Also - Mary Matthews - Wife -
aged: 47 - born: Timperley.   Plus 3 siblings and his maternal
grandmother.

1911 Census - 7 Edge Terrace, Southern Road, Ashton upon Mersey.   Son -
aged: 20 - occ: Apprentice to Electro Wiring Corporation - born: Ashton
upon Mersey.   Head of household - William Matthews - Married - aged: 52 -
occ: Coachman - born: Newry, Ireland.   Also - Mary Matthews - Wife - aged:
53 - born: Timperley.  Plus 1 elder sister and younger nephew.

Employed for five years as a Wireman at the Manchester Corporation Tramway
Sheds, Princess Rd, Manchester.

Enlisted on the 14th September 1914 and served on various fronts.

The 120th Battery RFA was part of 27 Brigade RFA and was formed on the 4th
August 1914 - it was in the front line straight away - at Mons 1914.  Also
at Le Cateau and in the Battles of the Marne & Aisne and the First Battle
of Ypres.

He had been invalided home awaiting his discharge from the Army, when he
contracted a chill which turned to Pneumonia.

Died of Phthisis (T.B.)   St. Martin's spelling - E. Matthews, also St.
Mary's, also Ashton U.R.C.   The C.W.G.C. & SDGW spell the name with only
one 't'

Death reported in the 01/11/1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.

Buried 28/10/1918 - Burial No. 15,742.

Commemorated on the Manchester Corporation Tramways Depot Memorial
currently situated in the entrance to the Bus Depot, Hyde Road,
Manchester.
