Born during the june quarter 1882 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/215, the eldest son of Thomas & Margaret MacDonald (nee Malley). 1891 Census - 5 Bank Street, Sale. Son - aged: 8 - born: Sale. Head of household - Thomas MacDonald - Married - aged:30 - occ: General Labourer - born: Ireland. Also - Margaret MacDonald - Wife - aged: 30 - born: Ireland. Plus 3 younger siblings and 4 lodgers. Attended St. Joseph's R.C. School, Sale. 1901 Census - 5 Bank Street, Sale. Son - aged: 18 - occ: House Painter & Decorator - born: Sale. Head of household - Thomas MacDonald - Married - aged:44 - occ: Dustman - born: Ireland. Also - Margaret MacDonald - Wife - aged: 30 - born: Ireland. Plus 5 younger siblings. 1911 Census - 15 Thorn Grove, Sale. Son - aged: 28 - occ: Painter - born: Sale. Head of household - Thomas MacDonald - Married - aged:52 - occ: Dustman - born: Ireland. Also - Margaret MacDonald - Wife - aged: 30 - born: Ireland. Plus 5 younger siblings. Employed for 12 years at Westinghouse Works, though not listed on their memorial. Relieved Canadians in 'Hessian' and 'Zollern' Trenches 04/10; Relieved and to Ovillers Post 06/10; Work parties dug 'Bainbridge' Trench and relieved 10th Cheshire's in reserve line 15/10; To 'Hessian' and 'Zollern' Trenches 16/10; Reserve line 17/10; 'Hessian Trench 19/10 - attack cancelled and withdrew to reserve line - 'A' Company attached to 8th Border Rgt for attack on 'Regina' Trench 21/10 - objective taken, plus 400 yards beyond. Relieved and to Albert 22/10. Killed in a charge. In the dark, his comrade made three attempts to recover his body. Death reported in the 19/01/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.
