Son of Mr. Mrs. A. Mackay, Royal Oak Inn, Stamford Street, Altrincham. Attended Stamford Park School and Lymm Grammar School. A keen footballer, he played for Altrincham Corinthians. A member of the 6th Altrincham Group, Boy Scouts and employed by a timber firm in Manchester. Had gained his D.F.M. by the time he was 17 and acted as an instructor to a bombing Sqadron. His expertise is no doubt why he was in 7 Sqn, as that was one of the "Pathfinder" Squadrons. Flying with 7 Sqn, they took off at 22.11 hours from RAF Oakington in a Stirling Bomber Mk1 - number N6010 MG for a bombing mission to Berlin. They crashed near Cloppenburg, Germany. The entire 7 man crew were killed. They were:- Flight Lt. N. Williams DFC, RNAF; Sgt. E. Rapley; Sgt. R.C. Watkins; Sgt. W.F. Hodson; Sgt. R.A. Pickers; Sgt. L. Smith and Flying Officer D. Mackay himself. Death reported in 23/05/1941 edition of the Sale & Stretford Guardian which includes a photograph of him. |
