Born on the 19th January 1919, the birth being registered during the March quarter 1919 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/974, the son of William Henry & Alice Ann Mooney (nee Booth). National Registration - 132 Higher Road, Urmston - William H. Mooney - Married - born: 18th August 1876 - occ: Retail Dealer, Footware. Alice E. Mooney - Married - born: 7th August 1878 - occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties. George Mooney - Single - born: 21st May 1916 - occ: Postman. Leslie Mooney - Single - occ: Boot Repairer. H.M.S. "Acasta", together with H.M.S. "Ardent" was escorting the aircraft carrier H.M.S. "Glorious" when they were attacked south west of Narvik and all three ships sunk between 16.00hrs & 17.30hrs on the 08/06/40 by gunfire from the German battlecruisers "Scharnhorst" & "Gneisenau", in position 68.45N 04.30E. It was an 'A' class destroyer, of which 9 were built between 1929 & 1930, they had a displacement of 1,350 tons and a complement of 134 personnel. The collapse of the low countries and northern France necessitated the abandonment of the Norwegian campaign. The evacuation of 27,000 men was carried out in the first week of June, almost without loss. The questionable decision to use one of the R.Ns. few carriers to then evacuate 17 R.A.F. fighters (of which 10 were obsolete bi-planes) and a lapse in the captain's tactical awareness, led to the loss of the carrier and her two screening destroyers. Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Urmston Cem. His father, William Henry died 16/11/1953 aged 80 years and his mother, Alice Ann died 13/11/1957 aged 79 years. |
