His father, Dr. Melland was the half brother of Miss Melland, the wife of Prime Minister Mr. Asquith, from whom a message of sympathy had been received. Listed as B. Trevor Roper Melland on St. John's Mem. Both he and his brother, Frederick Bernard Melland enlisted together in eary September 1914. Frederick also died on Active Service and both are commemorated on the family gravestone in Hale Cem. Originally he was in the Public Schools Bn of the Royal Fusiliers, but both brothers obtained commissions in the Royal Naval Division. In February they were drafted to the Dardanelles with the Anson Bn, being in their main landing party. Fred was severely wounded, but Brian was killed. His brother, Brian Trevor Roper also died on Active Service and both are commemorated on the family gravestone in Hale Cem. Their father, Dr. Brian Melland died in 1929 and their mother, Florence died in 1924. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1916, which states that he was aged 27. |
