Trafford

Born during the March quarter 1876 in the Oldham R.D. - ref: 8d/745, the
son of Isaac Shimwell & Rebekah McDougall (nee Smalley).  Birth registered
as 'Sidney McDougall'.  Born at Chadderton, part of the McDougall Flour
family.

1881 Census - 17 Northumberland Street, Broughton, Salford.    Son - aged:
5 - Scholar - born: Chadderton, Lancashire.   Head of household - J.S.
(stet) McDougall - Married - aged: 46 - occ: Partner Chemical Works
(employing 86 persons + Partner Engineering Boiler Making employing 66
persons) - born: Manchester.   Also - R. McDougall - Wife - aged: 40 -
born: Salford.   Plus 4 elder siblings (all born at Chadderton) and 3
domestic servants.

1891  Census - Castle Hotel, Market Street, Conway, Wales.   Visitor
(Sydney McDougall) - aged: 15 - School Boy - born: Manchester.   Also -
James (stet) S. McDougall - Married - aged: 50 - occ: Manufacturing Chemist
- born: Manchester.   His mother - Rebekah McDougall and 1 elder sister
were still residing at Northumberland Street together with 4 domestic
servants.

His mother died during the June quarter 1891 in the Salford R.D. - ref:
8d/68 - aged: 50.

Attended Manchester & Cambridge Universities.

1901 Census - No Trace of Sidney, but his father was residing at High Bank,
Didsbury, Manchester.   Head of household - Isaac S. McDougall - Head -
Widower - aged: 60 - occ: Chemical Manufacturer - born: Manchester.   Plus
Isaac's daughter - Jessie McDougall.

Married - Marion Iris Watrerhouse during the December quarter 1910 in the
Salford R.D. - ref: 8d/38.

1911 Census -  No trace of Sidney, but his father was residing at The
Orchard, The Avenue, Hale.    Head of household - Isaac Shimwell McDougall
- Widower - aged: 71 - occ: Manufacturing Chemist - born: Manchester.  Plus
Grandson - Phillip McDougall and grand daughter - Jean McDougall.

Attended Kings College, Cambridge.    One of the Managing Directors of
McDougall Bros. Ltd. Manchester.

Already serving in the old 2nd Manchester Volunteers Mounted Infantry and
joined the 6th Bn Manchester Rgt soon after war broke out.

According to Ray Westlake's "British Regiments at Gallipoli", the 6th
Battalion, Manchester Regiment served there in the 125th Brigade, 42nd
(East Lancashire) Division.   [From Aleaxandria], they sailed on  the S.S.
"Derfflinger" at 21.30 hrs on the 3rd May 1915, landing at Helles,
Gallipoli at 16.00 hrs on the 6th.  Moved to bivouacs on the cliff above
"W" Beach.  Each man carried 200 rounds of ammunition, 2 days supplies ands
iron rations, together with picks and shovels.  Moved to position west of
Krithia at 19.00 hrs on the 7th.   They took part in the 3rd Battle of
Krithia on the 4th June.  On the 1st August they were in the firing line
east of Krithia Nullah and were relieved on the 4th.  They took part in an
attack on Trenches G12A, G13, G11A & G12D on the 7th.  By 10.50 hrs the
first and second assaults were successful and Trench G10A strongly held,
but had to fall backafter a heavy counter attack at 19.15 hrs.  The
Battalion held its gains until nearly annihilated.

[The S.S. Derfflinger was a captured German vessel renamed S.S. Huntsgreen
and sailed between Alexandria and Gallipoli.  The ship had just discharged
500 casualties it had brought back from the fighting at Gallipoli] 

Death reported in the 24/08/1915 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.  
Listed as a Captain on the Christ Church Memorial.

His father was a member of the Manchester Reform Club, 81 King Street,
Manchester.

His widow - Marion Iris McDougall, married John G. Haworth in 1921.
